New F1 Rookies Set for FP1 Debuts in Abu Dhabi Season Finale
The 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix's FP1 session will feature several rookie drivers as teams fulfill their mandatory young driver requirements for the season.
Teams must run rookie drivers (those with two or fewer grand prix starts) in at least two FP1 sessions per season, with each regular driver required to give up one session. Abu Dhabi's FP1 is particularly suitable as it runs in daytime conditions, unlike the sunset-timed FP2, qualifying, and race.

Notable FP1 driver appearances include:
- McLaren: Ryo Hirakawa (Toyota-backed driver, will also test for Haas post-race)
- Ferrari: Arthur Leclerc (Charles Leclerc's younger brother, creating the first sibling teammate pairing in F1)
- Red Bull: Isack Hadjar (F2 title contender, replacing Max Verstappen)
- Aston Martin: Felipe Drugovich (2022 F2 champion, replacing Lance Stroll)
- RB: Ayumu Iwasa (replacing Yuki Tsunoda for his second FP1)
- Williams: Luke Browning (F3 third-place finisher, making his F1 debut)
This session is particularly significant for teams to evaluate young talent while completing their mandatory rookie driver requirements before the season concludes.
