
Malcolm Smith, Legendary Off-Road Motorcycle Champion and 'On Any Sunday' Star, Dies at 83
Malcolm Smith, a pioneering off-road racing legend and motorcycle icon, passed away on November 26, 2023, at age 83 after battling Parkinson's disease.

Born in British Columbia in 1941, Smith became one of North America's most celebrated motorcycle champions. His remarkable career included eight gold medals at the International Six Day Trials (1967-1976), making him the most successful American in the event's history. He dominated both motorcycle and open-wheel buggy competitions in the Mexican 1000/Baja 1000 races.
Key achievements include:
- 1967: Won inaugural NORRA Mexican 1000 motorcycle category with J.N. Roberts
- 1971: Victory in NORRA Mexican 1000 with Gunnar Nilsson
- 1975: Baja 1000 victory with Bud Feldkamp (four-wheels)
- 1977: Second Baja 1000 win with Feldkamp

Smith gained worldwide recognition through his appearance in Bruce Brown's 1971 documentary "On Any Sunday," alongside Steve McQueen. His legacy extends beyond racing - he established a successful motorcycle dealership in Riverside, California, and founded Malcolm Smith Racing gear.
His contributions earned him induction into multiple halls of fame:

- Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (1996)
- Motorcycle Hall of Fame (1998)
Smith's philanthropy included supporting the El Oasis Orphanage in Baja. He passed away peacefully at home in Riverside, surrounded by family, survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Louise and Ashley, and sons Joel and Alexander.
