The 2025 Formula 1 season's pre-season testing has kicked off with unprecedented expectations of an intensely competitive year ahead.

Teams are balancing their focus between the current season and the significant 2026 regulation changes, which Red Bull's Christian Horner describes as "probably the biggest change Formula 1's had in 50 years."
The 2024 season ended with four teams securing multiple race wins and one-two finishes, suggesting a natural convergence as teams master the current regulations. This trend is expected to continue into 2025, with team principals predicting an exceptionally close field.
McLaren's Zak Brown anticipates "at least four teams to win races, eight drivers," with the possibility of additional teams joining the competition occasionally. This optimism isn't merely hopeful speculation – it's backed by the strong performance seen in Abu Dhabi, where minimal time separated all ten teams.
The first day of testing demonstrated remarkable reliability across the grid:
- Haas: 160 laps
- Racing Bulls: 155 laps
- Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine, Red Bull, and Williams: 130+ laps each
- Aston Martin: 88 laps (affected by a power outage)
McLaren, despite lower lap counts, showed promising pace with Lando Norris topping the timing sheets. The MCL39 displayed particularly strong performance in technical sections, notably at Turn 11.
While testing times shouldn't be over-interpreted, the opening day has reinforced expectations of an incredibly competitive 2025 season, with multiple teams capable of fighting for victories.
