Formula E newcomers NEOM McLaren and rookie Taylor Barnard have achieved remarkable success early in the season, leading the teams' standings after a strong performance in Sao Paulo. The team joins Mercedes as only the second brand to simultaneously top both Formula E and Formula 1 championships.

At just 20 years old, Barnard became Formula E's youngest podium finisher with a third-place finish in the season opener. Despite facing early setbacks, including a drive-through penalty for energy overuse, both Barnard and teammate Sam Bird leveraged the situation to their advantage during later red flag restarts.

The success stems from a strong mentor-mentee relationship between veteran Bird and rookie Barnard, which began when Barnard substituted for an injured Bird last season. This collaborative atmosphere, fostered by McLaren's family-like environment, has proven crucial to the team's early achievements.

Bird acknowledges the team's impressive start while emphasizing room for improvement, particularly with the new GEN3 Evo car. The experienced driver notes that while their race operations were solid, refinements are needed to maintain consistent point-scoring performances.

Barnard, despite his podium success, maintains a pragmatic outlook. He identifies qualifying pace as an area for improvement, while acknowledging their strong powertrain performance. The team aims to build on their early momentum while focusing on consistent execution in future races.

The partnership between Bird's experience and Barnard's fresh talent, combined with McLaren's supportive team structure, positions NEOM McLaren as a strong contender in their Formula E campaign.
