Nissan dominated the session with Rowland's 1m10.162 lap time leading teammate Norman Nato by just 0.080s. The new GEN3 Evo formula, featuring all-wheel-drive and enhanced Hankook tires, showed significant improvement with times 2.627s faster than last year's pole position.
Key session highlights:
- Jake Dennis (Andretti) placed third, 0.267s behind Rowland
- Edoardo Mortara impressed with fourth place for Mahindra
- Rookie Taylor Barnard completed the top five for NEOM McLaren with the most laps (21)
- Mitch Evans finished sixth despite a late technical issue
- The top 10 were separated by less than 0.7s
Notable incidents included Nick Cassidy's Turn 1 runoff while testing Attack Mode, and Nico Mueller's session was compromised after wall contact damaged his Andretti car's suspension. Sam Bird and Mueller were the only drivers who didn't complete full-power Attack Mode laps.
Final standings showed strong performance across teams, with Nissan's factory team particularly impressive in securing the top two positions. The session demonstrated the significant performance gains of the new GEN3 Evo package, setting up an exciting race weekend in Sao Paulo.
