Penske Porsche Evaluating Third Driver for Le Mans Entry
Porsche Penske Motorsport is carefully evaluating driver options for its third 963 Hypercar entry at the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours. Following their recent Rolex 24 At Daytona victory, PPM plans to leverage its automatic invitation earned from winning the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech GTP Championship.

With eight current drivers in their Hypercar/GTP program, one position remains open for the third car. Porsche Motorsport Vice President Thomas Laudenbach confirmed they have numerous qualified candidates, including Formula E drivers with endurance racing experience and skilled GT drivers.
The selected driver will likely pair with Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy, alongside the two full-time FIA WEC entries:
- No. 5: Julien Andlauer/Michael Christensen/Mathieu Jaminet
- No. 6: Matt Campbell/Kevin Estre/Laurens Vanthoor
Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel, who tested the Porsche 963 last March, is among potential candidates. The team remains open to utilizing drivers from Team Penske's other racing programs, similar to Josef Newgarden's winning Rolex 24 appearance.
PPM Managing Director Jonathan Diuguid indicated the chosen driver might also compete at Spa-Francorchamps in May, filling in for Jaminet and Campbell who have IMSA commitments at Laguna Seca. The final decision will be made in the coming months to allow for simulator preparation.
Additional confirmed plans include:
- Campbell joining the No. 6 Porsche 963 for Qatar 1812 km and Imola
- Jaminet sharing the No. 5 with Andlauer and Christensen
- Three-driver lineups for both Hypercars in Bahrain
- Possible three-driver configurations for summer races due to climate challenges
The team will continue evaluating their options while maintaining focus on their pursuit of Porsche's 20th overall victory at Le Mans.
