NASCAR Modifies Open Exemption Provisional Rule to Expand Race Field to 41 Cars
NASCAR modifies the Open Exemption Provisional (OEP) rule to expand race fields to 41 cars when needed, ensuring fair competition opportunities for all teams.

The updated rule states that when an OEP is granted and more than 40 teams are entered, the field automatically expands to 41 cars. This modification addresses concerns about OEP entries potentially blocking other teams from qualifying.
Key changes to the OEP rule:
- Field expands to 41 cars when OEP is used with more than 40 entries
- Composition includes 36 charter teams, minimum 4 open teams, and 1 OEP team
- Teams must apply 90 days before an event
- Only one OEP granted per race
- OEP teams remain ineligible for points and prize money
- NASCAR reserves right to declare certain events ineligible for OEP
The rule revision follows feedback from industry stakeholders, including seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson's discussion with NASCAR chairman Jim France. This change was implemented after the rule's first use at the 2024 Daytona 500, where Trackhouse Racing utilized it for Helio Castroneves in the No. 91 car.
NASCAR's responsiveness to driver and team feedback demonstrates its commitment to maintaining competitive balance while accommodating special entry circumstances.
