Maury Gallagher, the organization's founder, will step back to serve as a team ambassador alongside Richard Petty, while Knighthead Capital Management, LLC, acquires a minority stake in the three-car team.

Johnson's journey to ownership began in 2023 when he joined Gallagher, three years after retiring from full-time competition at Hendrick Motorsports. During his brief hiatus from NASCAR, Johnson competed in the IndyCar Series and WeatherTech Sportscar Championship before returning to help rebrand Petty GMS Motorsports to Legacy Motor Club.

The transition to majority owner happened faster than expected, sparked by Gallagher's proposal in mid-fall. Johnson's partnership with Knighthead Capital developed through social connections in London, where he met Tom Wagner and other founders.

Key aspects of Legacy Motor Club's future include:

  • Focus on NASCAR while exploring motorsport expansion opportunities
  • Building a brand centered on winning races and championships
  • Immediate goal of placing at least one car in the postseason with drivers Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek
  • Long-term contracts with partners including Dollar Tree, Toyota, and AdventHealth

Johnson emphasizes his gratitude toward Gallagher, describing him as a mentor and friend whose commitment has positioned the team for success in the 2025 season. "I want to win races for him," Johnson says, highlighting his dedication to honoring Gallagher's legacy while leading the organization into its next chapter.
