Most EV charging happens at home through standard 120V outlets or faster 240V chargers. However, public charging infrastructure is crucial for long-distance travel and those without home charging access.

Fast charging (DC): This is what you need for quick charging on the road. Tesla's Supercharger network is the gold standard, delivering up to 250kW charging speeds that can add 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes under optimal conditions.

EVgo is working to compete by rapidly expanding its DC fast-charging network. The company currently operates over 850 fast-charging locations across the U.S., with stations capable of delivering 100-350kW charging speeds.

Key advantages of EVgo's network:

  • Compatible with all EV brands, not just Tesla
  • Strategic locations near shopping and amenities
  • Focus on urban areas where many EV owners lack home charging
  • Partnership with GM to add 3,250 new fast chargers by 2025

While Tesla maintains a significant lead in charging infrastructure with over 1,500 Supercharger stations in the U.S., EVgo's expansion helps address the critical need for more public fast-charging options as EV adoption grows. Their focus on universal compatibility and urban accessibility makes them an important player in building out America's charging network.

For EV owners, having access to both Tesla Superchargers and networks like EVgo provides more flexibility and charging options during long trips or when away from home charging.

The rapid growth of multiple charging networks will be essential to support the increasing number of EVs on the road and make electric vehicles a practical option for more drivers.
