Candid 470-Mile Journey in Chevy Bolt EV Shows Real Road Trip Experience
This 470-mile round trip in a Chevy Bolt EV to an Ed Sheeran concert in Pittsburgh turned into an unexpected adventure and learning experience for EV road tripping.
The journey began as an alternative to a planned Florida vacation, showcasing both the capabilities and challenges of long-distance EV travel. Our Bolt EV, with its EPA-rated 259-mile range, proved to be a reliable companion despite some initial range anxiety.
Charging stops were strategically planned using multiple apps, including PlugShare and ChargePoint. The first major stop at a 50kW DC fast charger added about 45 minutes to the trip, while utilizing Level 2 charging at the hotel overnight ensured a full battery for the return journey.
The real-world range varied significantly based on driving conditions. Highway speeds around 70-75 mph reduced efficiency compared to city driving, but maintaining a steady speed and using one-pedal driving helped maximize range when possible.
One notable discovery was the importance of backup charging locations. Several planned charging stops had non-functional chargers, highlighting the need for contingency plans when taking longer trips in an EV.
The total trip cost, including charging fees, came in significantly lower than equivalent gasoline expenses would have been. However, the trade-off was additional travel time due to charging stops.
Key takeaways from this journey:
- Plan charging stops before departure
- Have backup charging locations ready
- Consider weather conditions' impact on range
- Hotel charging can be a valuable overnight option
- Factor in additional travel time for charging stops
While the trip took longer than it would have in a conventional vehicle, it demonstrated that long-distance EV travel is entirely feasible with proper planning and a flexible mindset.
