BMW is considering a third Le Mans entry with its IMSA GTP car, joining other manufacturers seeking additional entries for the 2025 race. This potential expansion follows successful performances from both BMW Team WRT in WEC and Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL) in IMSA competition.

Key developments supporting this consideration include:

  • WRT's improved form in WEC during late 2024
  • RLL's strong showing at the 2025 Daytona 24 Hours
  • Introduction of a 'Joker' update focusing on brake performance

BMW M Motorsport boss Andreas Roos emphasized that while additional entries would be beneficial, financial viability is crucial for approval. The decision remains uncertain, despite RLL's impressive Rolex 24 performance where they secured pole position, set the fastest lap, and contended for overall victory.

Competition for grid spots at Le Mans 2025 is intense:

  • 62 total grid spaces available
  • 47 spots already allocated (36 WEC full-season entries + 11 auto-invites)
  • Multiple IMSA teams requesting entries, including Wayne Taylor Racing, Action Express, and Proton Competition
  • Porsche Penske Motorsport already secured a third entry through IMSA GTP title

The first version of the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours entry list is expected to be published next week.
