Record-breaking EV sales in 2023 (1.4 million units, 50% YoY increase) highlight the growing importance of interoperability between EVs and charging infrastructure. Interoperability ensures seamless charging across different EV models and charging stations through effective vehicle-to-charger communication.

Based on extensive testing at the EVgo Innovation Lab, here are key best practices to enhance EV charging experience:

Extended Authentication Time

  • Current standard: 60-second authentication window
  • Recommended: 150 seconds (2.5 minutes)
  • Benefits: Gives drivers sufficient time to initiate charging sessions
  • Implementation: Both vehicles and chargers should adopt longer timeouts

Seamless Session Retry

  • Vehicles should attempt at least 5 retries before timeout
  • Helps correct common errors: cable check and pre-charge failures
  • Improves first-time connection success rates
  • No need to unplug during retry process

Standardized Communication Identifiers

  • Match EVCCID with MAC address
  • Avoid duplicate MAC addresses across vehicles
  • Enables Autocharge+ functionality
  • Supports future Plug & Charge technology (ISO 15118-2)

Standardized Port Locations

  • Current challenge: 5 different possible locations across 50+ EV models
  • Issues: Requires longer cables, increases strain and weight
  • Solution: Standardize port location similar to gas vehicles
  • Benefits: Simplified station design, improved accessibility, better user experience

These best practices support:

  • Increased charging efficiency
  • Better accessibility
  • Enhanced user experience
  • Accelerated EV adoption
  • Achievement of national electrification goals

EVgo continues to collaborate with industry stakeholders through CharIN Testival North America, ChargeX Consortium, and international standards organizations to improve the EV charging experience for all drivers.
