The Mazda Miata has shaped motorsports history for 35 years, launching countless professional racing careers and dominating various racing categories since its 1990 debut.

Many IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship winners, including Robby Foley, Stevan McAleer, and Patrick Gallagher, started their careers in Miatas. Even NASCAR driver Connor Zilisch developed his skills in Spec Miata racing before becoming a Rolex 24 at Daytona winner.

Randy Pobst secured the first SCCA National Championship in a Miata in 1992, marking the beginning of the car's competitive success. Since then, various Miata models have claimed championships across multiple classes, including E Production, F Production, GT-Lite, Super Touring Lite, and Touring 4.

In autocross competition, the Miata has been particularly dominant. Marla Davis won the first SCCA Solo National Championship with a Miata in 1993, followed by Bob Klingler's C Stock victory in 1994. To date, Miatas have secured 180 SCCA Solo National Championships.

The introduction of Spec Miata in 1999 revolutionized grassroots racing. Created by Shannon McMasters in collaboration with Mazda Motorsports, this spec class featured standardized rules across all regions, making it possible to race the same car anywhere in the country. The class incorporated both 1.6- and 1.8-liter models, balanced through weight and restrictors.

Spec Miata's popularity exploded, leading to the creation of Pro Spec Miata series in 2003. The class has produced over 3,000 race cars in the U.S. alone and continues to deliver incredibly close competition, exemplified by the 2023 SCCA National Championship's historic dead-heat finish between Preston Pardus and Nick Bruni.

The Miata's racing success stems from its excellent handling, reliability, and Mazda's strong motorsport support programs. From amateur racing to professional competitions, the Miata has proven itself as an ideal platform for driver development and competitive motorsport.

This legacy continues today through the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, where the next generation of racing talent develops their skills in one of motorsport's most successful grassroots platforms.
