UK Air Pollution Crisis: MPs Warn of £20bn Annual Cost as EV Expert Responds
Air pollution costs the UK £20bn annually according to MPs, highlighting the urgent need to transition to electric vehicles (EVs). Here's why the shift to EVs is becoming increasingly viable:

The main barriers to EV adoption are rapidly disappearing:
- Battery costs have plummeted from $1,000/kWh in 2010 to $209/kWh in 2017
- Total cost of ownership is now comparable to conventional vehicles
- By early 2020s, EVs will be cheaper to own and maintain than petrol/diesel vehicles
- Battery technology advances have significantly increased lifespan
- New models launching with 200+ mile range, including:
- Tesla Model 3
- Jaguar I-Pace
- Audi e-tron
Market forces, rather than government intervention, will drive this transition. With improving technology and falling costs, there will be no practical reason to choose conventional vehicles over EVs by 2025.
This shift will significantly improve both environmental and public health outcomes, addressing the current air quality emergency facing the UK.
