Since IndyCar's hybrid transition in July 2024 at Mid-Ohio, Scott McLaughlin has emerged as the series' standout performer. The Team Penske driver leads with an impressive 4.2 average starting position, significantly ahead of competitors Colton Herta and Alex Palou, who both average 8.0.

McLaughlin's race performance is equally remarkable, maintaining a 5.0 average finish across hybrid-era events, outpacing Herta (7.2) and Palou (7.3). This success spans all track types - road courses, street circuits, and ovals.

The New Zealander's background in Australian Supercars may explain his adaptability to the heavier hybrid IndyCar, which now weighs over 2000 lbs with driver and fuel. His experience managing heavy Ford Falcons and other Supercars has proven invaluable in handling the additional 105 lbs from the energy recovery systems.

"I enjoy the complexities of it, like trying to figure out energy levels and what works where and how does that change throughout the lap?" McLaughlin explains. Working with race engineer Ben Bretzman, he's developed a consistent balance that delivers results.

McLaughlin credits his success to lessons learned from former Supercars boss Garry Rogers, who instilled a no-nonsense approach: "Figure out what you need and just drive the f***ing thing." This mentality has helped the seven-time IndyCar race winner and nine-time pole-sitter excel in the series' new hybrid era.
