As Mercedes' longest-serving current driver, George Russell embraces his new leadership role following Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari. With 128 race starts and extensive team experience, the 26-year-old Briton is ready to guide Mercedes alongside rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli.

"This is not the beginning of the end, rather the end of the beginning," Russell reflects, drawing parallels with other F1 champions who peaked in their late twenties and early thirties. He notes that Lewis Hamilton was 29 when beginning his dominant Mercedes era, while Michael Schumacher found greatest success in his early thirties at Ferrari.

Despite being the more experienced driver, Russell maintains a learning mindset and acknowledges the competitive threat from younger talents. He particularly emphasizes the importance of Antonelli's input, stating that despite the rookie's age, "his opinion will be just as valid."

The team's dynamics are further strengthened by Valtteri Bottas's return as reserve driver. Russell values Bottas's extensive experience, particularly his recent insights from Sauber with the Ferrari power unit. Their relationship has evolved positively from past rivalries, with Russell noting they now regularly train together and share travel arrangements.

"Having someone with so much simulator and racing knowledge, and who fully knows the team is going to be great," Russell says of Bottas, highlighting the professional approach both drivers maintain in their new working relationship.
