Red Bull's Right Call on Perez Overshadowed by Risky Future Driver Strategy
Sergio Perez's departure from Red Bull Racing marks a significant turning point, following a dramatic decline in performance during the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Perez started 2024 strongly, securing three one-two finishes with Max Verstappen in the first four races and nearly matching Verstappen's qualifying pace at Suzuka. This performance led to Red Bull extending his contract for 2025-26 after the Miami Grand Prix.
However, following Miami, Perez's performance drastically declined. He failed to finish in the top five for the remainder of the season, scoring just 49 points in 18 races compared to Verstappen's 301 points in the same period.
Red Bull's decision to terminate Perez's contract was inevitable given this performance gap. However, their apparent choice to promote Liam Lawson as his replacement raises concerns. Previous young drivers in the second Red Bull seat - Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon - struggled similarly, suggesting a systemic issue rather than driver-specific problems.
The team passed on experienced options like Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo, instead reverting to their traditional approach of fast-tracking young talent. While Yuki Tsunoda, with his experience and proven track record at RB, might have been a more logical choice, Red Bull appears set on Lawson despite his limited F1 experience.
This decision pattern suggests Red Bull hasn't fully addressed the underlying challenges that have affected multiple second-seat drivers. The team's approach to managing their second driver may need reassessment to break this cycle of underperformance.
