Pato O'Ward is actively working to improve his qualifying performance in IndyCar after a challenging start to the season, qualifying 23rd at St. Petersburg despite showing excellent race pace.

The Mexican driver, who hasn't secured a pole position in nearly three years since Mid-Ohio, acknowledges the significant impact poor qualifying has on race outcomes. Despite managing to climb from last place to 11th at St. Petersburg, O'Ward recognizes that starting from better grid positions is crucial for achieving podium finishes and victories.

The qualifying struggles present an unusual challenge for O'Ward, who secured three wins last year. Known for his quick reflexes and aggressive racing style, he's finding it difficult to replicate his previous qualifying success, particularly with the new hybrid system.

O'Ward suggests the hybrid Dallara DW12 chassis, with its additional 105 pounds of rear weight, might be contributing to his qualifying challenges. The changed weight distribution affects his driving style, which typically relies on a responsive front axle and quick oversteer corrections.

"How I ran my cars in qualifying — with that little edge that you can deal with for a lap or two... It just doesn't seem to be possible with the hybrid," O'Ward explains. While he's occasionally achieved front-row starts with the hybrid car, the consistency isn't there, and he's focusing on finding solutions to this challenge early in the season.

The Arrow McLaren driver remains determined to address these qualifying issues, aiming to consistently start within the top five positions to maximize his race potential.
