NRG Energy Opens First EVgo Fast-Charging Station in New Jersey
Electric vehicle charging reached a milestone in New Jersey with NRG Energy unveiling the state's first EVgo Freedom Station at Quaker Bridge Mall in Lawrence. The charging station demonstrated impressive efficiency, fully charging CEO David Crane's Nissan LEAF in just over 30 minutes.
The Freedom Station features three charging options:
- Two fast chargers delivering 80 miles of range in 30 minutes
- One standard charger requiring about three hours for a full charge
This installation is part of NRG's broader network of 400 Freedom Stations across 26 cities, developed in partnership with Simon malls. The strategic placement follows NRG's "urban, suburban ecosystem model," targeting areas where electric vehicles are most commonly used.
The charging station addresses several key objectives:
- Supports New Jersey's efforts to meet air quality standards
- Reduces dependence on foreign oil imports
- Enhances local air quality through zero-emission vehicles
- Provides convenient charging for shoppers and diners
Environmental impact remains a crucial factor, as New Jersey continues to face air quality challenges from out-of-state power plants and diesel-powered engines. According to DEP Commissioner Bob Martin, such charging infrastructure investments are vital for encouraging sustainable transportation adoption.
The economic implications are significant. Despite increased domestic oil production of 7-8 million barrels daily, the US still imports 7 million barrels per day. At $50 per barrel, this represents approximately $1 billion in overseas spending every three days, highlighting the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles for both environmental and economic benefits.
This installation marks the first EVgo station in the New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia areas, with more locations planned as part of NRG's ongoing expansion efforts.
