First-Time EV Fast Charging: A Beginner's Guide to What You Need to Know
As a new EV driver, your first public fast charging experience might seem daunting. Here's everything you need to know to make it simple and stress-free.
Understanding Charger Levels
Level 2 (L2) chargers are slower, taking 5-6 hours for an 80% charge. For quicker charging, use Level 3 (DCFC/DC fast chargers), which take just 15-45 minutes. Note that while all battery EVs can use DC fast chargers, most plug-in hybrids are limited to L2 charging.
Choosing the Right Connector
EVs use four main connector types:
- Type 1 (J1772): For L2 charging only
- CHAdeMO: Mainly for Japanese brands (Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota)
- CCS: Most North American and European vehicles
- Tesla: Tesla vehicles only
Don't worry about choosing wrong – connectors are designed to only fit their compatible charging ports.
Preparing for Your First Charge
- Download charging apps beforehand (like EVgo and PlugShare)
- Create accounts and set up payment methods
- Locate charging stations near your frequent destinations
- Check that the station has your compatible connector type
The Charging Process
- Select your connector from the charging station
- Note that charging cables are heavier than gas pump hoses
- Insert the connector into your vehicle's charging port
- Start charging via app, program card, or credit card
- When finished, remove connector and return to holster
Making the Most of Charging Time
Choose charging locations strategically near:
- Coffee shops
- Shopping centers
- Restaurants
- Parks
- Libraries
- Grocery stores
This allows you to complete errands or take breaks while charging your vehicle.
Remember, while the first time might feel overwhelming, public charging quickly becomes second nature. The process is straightforward, clean, and more environmentally friendly than traditional gas station visits.
