Norris set the pace with a commanding soft-tire lap midway through the session as darkness fell at Yas Marina Circuit. His teammate Piastri, who missed FP1 for rookie testing, finished 0.234s behind, with both McLarens significantly ahead of their competitors.

Carlos Sainz managed fourth for Ferrari, 0.582s off Norris's pace, while teammate Charles Leclerc struggled to sixth after traffic disrupted his flying lap. Leclerc faces an additional challenge with a 10-place grid penalty for a new battery installation during FP1.

Nico Hulkenberg impressed with fourth place for Haas, while Lewis Hamilton secured fifth for Mercedes. The top 10 was rounded out by Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, Alex Albon, and Yuki Tsunoda.

Red Bull Racing faced unexpected challenges, with Sergio Perez managing only 14th and Max Verstappen struggling in 17th, 1.081s off the pace. Verstappen reported significant handling issues, including severe understeer.

The session ended early for Williams rookie Franco Colapinto after floor damage from hitting curbs at Turn 9, placing him last behind Alpine debutant Jack Doohan.
