NASCAR Introduces Optional Soft Tire Compound for Phoenix Spring Race
NASCAR Cup Series teams will have access to an option tire for the March 9 race at Phoenix Raceway, adding a strategic element to the competition.

Teams will receive one set of option tires for practice sessions, though qualifying must be completed using the primary tire. For the 312-lap main event, each team's allocation includes two sets of option tires and six sets of primary tires.
Following the same format used at Richmond Raceway last fall, teams will have complete freedom in deciding when to use the option tires during the race. The option tire features a softer compound that provides increased grip but experiences faster wear compared to the primary tire.
This tire strategy was first introduced at the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May, with Richmond hosting its first implementation in a points-paying race in August.
If the Phoenix spring race proves successful, NASCAR plans to make the current option tire the primary choice for the November championship finale, where no option tire will be available.
