NASCAR Driver Preece Warns of Safety Concerns After Latest Daytona 500 Flip
After experiencing another rollover crash during Sunday night's Daytona 500, Ryan Preece issued a stark warning to NASCAR about the increasing danger of superspeedway accidents.

Formula 1 car crashes during race
The incident occurred with five laps remaining when Christopher Bell, leading the outside lane, was turned into the wall after contact from Cole Custer. Preece, running around 12th position, had nowhere to avoid the collision. His car launched nose-first into the air upon impact with Bell's vehicle, flipping onto its roof before sliding across the banking and eventually returning upright.
"I don't know if it's the diffuser or what that makes these cars like a sheet of plywood when you walk out on a windy day," Preece stated. "When the car took off like that and it got real quiet, all I thought about was my daughter. I'm lucky to walk away but we're getting really close to somebody not being able to."
This marks Preece's second aerial incident at Daytona in less than two years. In summer 2023, he experienced a violent barrel roll after being spun on the backstretch and hitting Chase Briscoe's car. That incident prompted NASCAR to remove all grass from the backstretch area.
Before the crash, Preece had led six laps in his BuildSubmarines.com Ford Mustang and showed strong potential. He finished 32nd after the accident, which was the only flip during this year's Daytona 500.
"We had a really good car," Preece reflected. "When you get down to the end of these races, we are all just really aggressive because you have to be. It's just frustrating when you can't do anything with it."
