IndyCar Increases Alternate Tire Allocation, Reduces Primary Sets for 2025 Season
IndyCar and Firestone have announced significant changes to their tire allocation system for the 2025 season, focusing on road and street courses. The new system will provide teams with an equal distribution of five sets each of primary and alternate tires, compared to the previous allocation of four alternate and six primary sets.

Two exceptions to this new rule include:
- The Thermal Club's high-wear road course, where more primary tires are required
- The Indianapolis road course event, which will maintain the previous allocation (four alternates, six primaries) due to its shorter duration
Additional regulations remain unchanged from 2024:
- Teams can use alternate tires during opening practice sessions
- Rookies receive an extra set of primary tires
- Firestone will increase the performance gap between primary and alternate compounds
Driver Colton Herta praised the changes, noting they will help teams that qualify in positions 11-12 during Fast 12 sessions. The new allocation should reduce the disadvantage these teams previously faced against competitors who didn't advance to the Fast 12 and had more fresh alternate sets available for the race.
These modifications aim to give teams more strategic control and create more competitive racing scenarios throughout the season.
