Firestone IndyCar Aluminum Wheel Transition Delayed to 2027
The IndyCar series will continue using magnesium wheels until at least 2027, postponing the planned switch to aluminum wheels. This decision was finalized during the pre-season team managers meeting in early February.

The proposed change to aluminum wheels was driven by two main factors:
- Cost reduction compared to the current magnesium wheels
- Safety concerns regarding the 'aero lip' on front wheels, which can break into dangerous shards upon impact
The timing of the potential switch to aluminum wheels may align with IndyCar's next chassis introduction in 2027. Magnesium wheels have been a staple in the series since the CART IndyCar Series era, valued for their lightweight properties despite being more brittle than aluminum alternatives.
