Lando Norris expressed surprise at Ferrari's underwhelming qualifying performance at the Australian Grand Prix, despite earlier predictions of their competitiveness. The McLaren driver secured pole position with a significant 0.4s gap to Red Bull's Max Verstappen and over 0.7s to the leading Ferrari.

During Thursday's media session, Norris had challenged reports suggesting McLaren's dominance, expecting Ferrari to be a stronger contender. Friday practice sessions supported this view, with Ferrari showing competitive pace alongside McLaren and Mercedes.

Qualifying initially appeared tight, with just 0.662s covering the top 17 cars in Q1. However, McLaren's advantage emerged clearly in Q3, leading to a front-row lockout. Charles Leclerc, qualifying seventh, cited increasing car inconsistency as they pushed harder throughout the session.

Lewis Hamilton, now at Ferrari, finished eighth and acknowledged his ongoing adaptation process, noting the significant gap to his teammate Leclerc's natural comfort with the car. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella remains cautious, suggesting Ferrari's true potential hasn't been fully displayed.

The weather forecast indicates potential rain for Sunday's race, which could particularly benefit Max Verstappen, known for his exceptional wet-weather driving. Despite McLaren's strong qualifying performance, both the weather conditions and Verstappen's presence directly behind the McLarens could significantly impact race outcomes.

A competitive Ferrari performance remains possible for the race, with Stella emphasizing that single qualifying sessions don't necessarily reflect a team's true potential. The combination of uncertain weather conditions and strong competitors suggests an unpredictable and exciting Australian Grand Prix ahead.
