Ferrari Makes History with Qatar 1-2-3 in FIA WEC Season Opener

Two Ferrari racers battling on track
Ferrari dominated the 2025 Qatar 1812Km, securing their first-ever 1-2-3 finish in the FIA World Endurance Championship since the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours. The No. 50 factory team of Fuoco, Nielsen, and Molina led the historic achievement, marking Ferrari's first non-Le Mans victory with their factory cars.
The Italian manufacturer's success came after extensive winter testing at the Qatar circuit, where they focused on tire management and strategy. Team manager Batti Pregliasco credited their improved performance to learning from previous mistakes and better understanding tire compounds throughout the 10-hour race.
Ferrari's strategic management in the closing stages ensured a controlled finish between their three cars, maximizing manufacturer points under new regulations that require two cars to score points instead of one.
Key competitors faced challenges during the race:
- Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA and BMW M Team WRT showed potential but were hindered by incidents and penalties
- Porsche Penske Motorsport lacked pace compared to last year's 1-2-3 finish
- Toyota struggled at Lusail circuit, managing only fifth and sixth places
Looking ahead to Imola, Ferrari's home event, questions remain about their continued dominance. New Balance of Performance regulations for 2025 include:
- Enhanced lap time data analysis
- Consideration of tire wear performance
- Data from previous three events
- Improved transparency between rule makers and manufacturers
The season's next round at Imola will reveal whether Ferrari can maintain their competitive edge or if the new BoP adjustments will level the playing field for other manufacturers.
