Williams team principal James Vowles has clarified that Franco Colapinto's move to Alpine is temporary, with plans for the Argentine driver to return to Williams in the future.

Colapinto, who scored five points in nine races for Williams in 2024, joined Alpine as a reserve driver on a multi-year deal after losing his race seat to Carlos Sainz for 2025.

Vowles expressed his hope for Colapinto to race in place of Jack Doohan during the 2025 or 2026 season, emphasizing that the Alpine move was arranged to ensure Colapinto maintains active racing experience.

"Franco is my driver that I want back in that car," Vowles stated. "After a period of time, he'll return to Williams." While the exact timing remains undefined, the arrangement demonstrates Williams' long-term interest in Colapinto despite their current driver lineup of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon being contracted through 2026.

The move showcases Williams' strategic approach to driver development, maintaining ties with promising talent while ensuring their continued growth through race experience with other teams.
