Mid-Ohio Makes Major Safety Upgrades Including China Beach Elimination
The historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is undergoing significant safety and infrastructure improvements, with three major updates being implemented during the off-season.
The most notable change addresses the infamous 'China Beach' area at Turn 4, where Simon Pagenaud experienced a severe crash in 2023. The previously recessed gravel trap has been filled with approximately 16,000 cubic yards of material, bringing it level with the racing surface. The banking has been reduced from over four degrees to less than two degrees, and new safety features include:
- A 10-foot grass band before the gravel trap
- A 100-foot long, 3-foot wide concrete rumble strip
- Modified curbing and grass placement

Additional facility improvements include:
- Replacement of old concrete blocks with modern steel I-beams and W-rail barriers
- Installation of heavier gauge fence posts and fencing (5,400 feet)
- Repaving of high-traffic areas from Gate 3 through the middle and upper paddocks
These updates, overseen by Green Savoree Race Promotions, were developed in collaboration with engineering firm Arcadia and racing specialists Dallara, ensuring improved safety while maintaining the track's historic character.
