Mercedes' Russell Baffled by Unexpected Tire Issues in Jeddah
George Russell encountered unexpected tire overheating issues during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, marking a significant departure from Mercedes' consistent podium-contending performance this season.
Despite holding fifth position, Russell finished nearly 30 seconds behind Oscar Piastri, with particularly severe pace degradation in the final stages. The Mercedes driver had maintained contact with the leaders early in the race but experienced dramatic tire deterioration during the second stint, losing approximately one second per lap in the closing laps.

The performance decline was unexpected, especially considering Mercedes' strong showing in previous races. Russell noted that limited practice runs may have masked potential issues, stating, "We did no laps in practice in the long run so we couldn't really capture what the potential problems were going to be."
Despite the challenges, Mercedes' overall 2025 season performance shows improvement, with the team doubling their points compared to the previous year. However, Russell acknowledges that while fifth place represents their current competitive level, the team needs significant performance gains to challenge for race wins.
"We do want to be fighting for wins, but right now we don't have the pace to do so," Russell admitted. "We need to find some performance and find it quick." The team plans to analyze the contrasting performances between recent races to address the unexpected tire management issues.
