This marks Magnussen's second venture into top-tier sports car racing, following his successful 2021 season with Cadillac in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, where he secured one victory and five podium finishes. He also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year in the LMP2 category alongside his father, Jan Magnussen.
Andreas Roos, head of BMW M Motorsport, praised Magnussen's decade-long Formula 1 experience and previous sports car prototype racing as valuable assets to their program. The specific details of Magnussen's commitments and BMW's complete driver lineup for both IMSA and WEC will be announced later.
Magnussen expressed enthusiasm about representing BMW in legendary races, stating: "After 10 years in Formula 1, I am embarking on a new and exciting chapter. I look forward to taking on the challenge in the most innovative and advanced sports cars in the history of endurance racing."
The transition will take place after Magnussen concludes his current Formula 1 season with Haas at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
