Firestone adjusts its tire allocation strategy for The Thermal Club's championship race debut, addressing the track's notorious reputation for rapid tire wear. Due to the aggressive surface, teams will receive six sets of primary tires and four sets of alternates, deviating from the standard five-five distribution introduced at St. Petersburg.

Cara Krstolic, Firestone's chief engineer, explains their approach for Thermal's challenging 3.067-mile circuit focuses on enhancing primary tire durability rather than softening the alternates. This strategy responds to IndyCar's request for greater performance differentiation between compounds while ensuring tire longevity on the abrasive surface.

The 2025 race presents new challenges with cars now 105 pounds heavier due to hybrid systems, offset partially by magnesium components. This weight increase significantly affects tire performance and degradation, particularly for the alternate compounds.

Following Thermal, the series heads to Long Beach in April, where the standard five-five tire allocation returns. Driver feedback from St. Petersburg's high-degradation alternates remains mixed, with some concerned about rapid performance drop-off after just one or two qualifying laps. However, this aligns with IndyCar's goal of creating more diverse racing strategies through tire management.

IndyCar's tire strategy continues to evolve, balancing driver preferences with the series' objective of enhancing racing quality through strategic tire management challenges.
