Iconic Apple #12 Sprint Car Returns to Pennsylvania Racing with Ashley Cappetta
Racing legend Greg Hodnett's iconic Apple #12 is making a return to Central Pennsylvania race tracks, with Ashley Cappetta behind the wheel for the remainder of the 2025 season in the 358 sprint car division. The partnership comes with support from former Apple car owner Bob Stewart.

The revival began as a brief tribute planned for Port Royal and Lincoln Speedway's Weldon Sterner Memorial but evolved into a full-season commitment after overwhelming fan response. Cappetta recently finished fourth in the Sterner Memorial, winning her heat race in a night filled with meaningful coincidences.
The car will maintain its classic appearance, including the original stripes, color scheme, smiley apple, and signature #12, while incorporating Cappetta's current sponsors in non-intrusive areas. The hood will continue to display Greg Hodnett as the driver, honoring his legacy.
For Cappetta, this opportunity holds deep personal significance. She first met Hodnett in 2004 when he drove the Apple #12, and her uncle Rob built motors for the team. Before proceeding with the full-season plans, Cappetta received blessing from Sherry Hodnett, Greg's widow, who supported the tribute.
The partnership also marks Bob Stewart's return to a more prominent role in sprint car racing. New merchandise featuring the Apple #12 tribute design will be available later this season.
At the recent Weldon Sterner Memorial, Cappetta demonstrated the car's potential with a strong fourth-place finish and a heat race win, earning both prize money and a gallon of cider from Mickley's Orchard & Farm. The event held special meaning with Stewart in attendance, marking one of his rare track appearances in recent years.
About Ashley Cappetta: A second-generation racer, Cappetta began her racing career in 2012, following her family's motorsport legacy. Her father was Steve Smith's crew chief, and her uncle Rob Cappetta drove the #89 sprint car before becoming a gasman for Robert Yates Racing. Ashley has distinguished herself as the first female driver in her family, combining racing skills with mechanical knowledge to provide detailed feedback to her team.
The team receives support from numerous partners, including Gettysburg Trading Post, Mikes Towing & Recovery, and various local businesses. Sponsorship opportunities for the 2025 season remain available through [email protected].
