Gonzalez Masters Tricky Conditions to Win MX-5 Cup Daytona Opener
Tyler Gonzalez secured victory in the season opener of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup at Daytona International Speedway, climbing from 14th position to first place in challenging weather conditions.

Blurred race cars at high speed
Racing under the speedway lights in cold and wet conditions, all competitors were required to use rain tires. Early race leader and defending champion Gresham Wagner retired due to mechanical issues, while pole-sitter Nate Cicero's gamble to switch to slick tires proved costly.
The lead battle intensified between Gonzalez and Bryce Cornet, with rookie Ethan Goulart joining the fight. The trio eventually formed a six-car pack at the front as rain conditions worsened. The race concluded under yellow flag conditions due to Christian Hodneland's engine failure, securing Gonzalez's third Daytona MX-5 Cup victory.
Key race highlights:
- Ethan Goulart finished second in his debut race
- Bryce Cornet secured his first podium in four seasons
- Jeremy Fletcher earned the Penske Shocking Performance Award, advancing from last to eighth
- Alex Bachoura won the Takumi Award
- Six female drivers competed, with Heather Hadley finishing highest in 18th
The second race of the weekend is scheduled for Friday at 10:15am ET, streaming live on The RACER Channel on YouTube.
