FIA Launches Tender Process for Next Generation LMP2 Powertrain
The FIA, partnering with ACO and IMSA, has launched the first of two tender processes to define the future of LMP2 racing beyond the current 2017 ruleset.

LMP3 cars racing at IMSA competition
This initial tender focuses on powertrain and electronics specifications, marking a significant change from the 2017 regulations by requiring a single-specification powertrain system. Previously, chassis manufacturers could choose their gearbox suppliers while using Gibson Technologies' GK 428 V8 engine.
Although Gibson's contract was originally extended until 2030, the proposed regulations were scrapped in June 2024. The current LMP2 formula will now continue across ELMS, Asian Le Mans Series, IMSA, and Le Mans until the end of 2027.
Key Points About the New Tender:
- Submission deadline: April 30, 2025
- Final decision announcement: June 10, 2025
- Implementation period: 2028 through 2032
- Powertrain and chassis supplies must be from different manufacturers
- Chassis tender details to follow separately
Cost Restrictions:
- Lease option: Maximum €1,500 (excluding VAT) per running hour for engine and control unit
- Purchase option: Price structure to be determined
- Transmission cost cap: Maximum €550 (excluding VAT) per running hour, including new parts, rebuilds, and support
The tender process represents a significant evolution in LMP2 racing, focusing on cost control while maintaining competitive standards in international motorsport.
