F1 legend Fittipaldi: Russell-Verstappen drama is exactly what motorsport needs
The recent verbal clash between George Russell and Max Verstappen is a positive development for Formula 1, according to motorsport legend Emerson Fittipaldi. The two-time F1 champion and double Indy 500 winner believes such rivalries showcase drivers' authentic personalities.

The controversy stemmed from an incident at the Qatar Grand Prix, where Russell claimed Verstappen threatened to "put you on your f****** head in the wall," leading Verstappen to label Russell a "backstabber" before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
"I like it a lot, because it shows the personality of each athlete," Fittipaldi explained. "The public want to see who's behind. We need less PR people around the drivers and more right foot. When the flags drop, the bull**** stops."
Fittipaldi also expressed enthusiasm about fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto joining Kick Sauber (future Audi factory team) in 2025. As the first Brazilian F1 driver since Felipe Massa's 2017 departure, Bortoleto's entry marks a significant moment for Latin American representation in the sport.
Regarding Audi's upcoming F1 project, Fittipaldi dismissed concerns about potential delays, citing the manufacturer's rich motorsport heritage, including its success as Auto Union in the 1930s. "They know how to go racing," he affirmed. "Audi going back to Formula 1 is going to be incredible. They're going to be strong."
