Volkswagen has confirmed its most affordable electric vehicle yet - the ID.1, set to launch in 2027 with a target price under £20,000. This compact EV will effectively replace the e-Up city car in VW's lineup.
The ID.1 features a bold SUV-inspired design with rectangular headlights reminiscent of the 1980s Jetta and wide wheel arches that give it a muscular stance despite its small size. The design marks a departure from the rounded aesthetics of current ID models.

Expected to be larger than the e-Up, the ID.1 will likely share technology with the upcoming ID.2all concept. This could mean a potential range of up to 450km (280 miles) for top-spec versions - significantly more than the e-Up's 159-mile range. Multiple battery options are expected to be available, allowing VW to offer both affordable entry-level models and longer-range variants.

While Volkswagen targets a €20,000 starting price in Europe (approximately £17,000), UK pricing is likely to be closer to £20,000 due to right-hand drive conversion costs. This pricing strategy positions the ID.1 as a crucial part of Volkswagen's mission to make electric vehicles more accessible to mainstream buyers.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Shäfer describes the ID.1 as "an affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe," emphasizing the company's commitment to democratizing electric mobility.
